Tanzania Election Protests: Hundreds Dead? Uncovering the Truth Behind the Chaos (2025)

A cloud of uncertainty hangs over Tanzania as reports emerge of widespread violence and alleged deaths following the recent presidential election. The main opposition party claims hundreds have perished in protests, a stark contrast to the government's assertion that these figures are 'hugely exaggerated.'

President Samia Suluhu Hassan's election, held on Wednesday, has sparked controversy. Key challengers were either imprisoned or barred from participating. The Chadema party, a prominent opposition voice, faced the arrest of its leader in April on treason charges and was excluded from the election for refusing to sign a code of conduct.

In the wake of the election, which the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party aimed to dominate, chaos erupted. Protests erupted in Dar es Salaam and other cities, with demonstrators targeting the president's posters, police, and polling stations.

But here's where it gets controversial... The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called for a thorough investigation into the alleged excessive use of force. Simultaneously, foreign ministers from Britain, Canada, and Norway have expressed concern, urging Tanzanian authorities to exercise restraint and respect freedom of expression.

The Disputed Death Toll:

Chadema's spokesperson, John Kitoka, claims the party has documented approximately 700 deaths since Wednesday, based on accounts from healthcare workers. A security source and a diplomat in Dar es Salaam have also confirmed that deaths are in the hundreds. However, the UN human rights office reports at least 10 deaths in Dar es Salaam, Shinyanga, and Morogoro.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo dismissed the opposition's figures as exaggerated, stating the government has no record of any deaths and denies the use of excessive force by security officers.

And this is the part most people miss... With foreign journalists largely barred and a communications blackout in place, information from the ground is scarce. The UN has reported 'credible reports' of 10 deaths, while Amnesty International claims at least 100 fatalities. Reuters has been unable to independently verify these casualty figures.

Government Buildings Under Attack:

Protests have continued since Wednesday, fueled by the exclusion of President Hassan's main challengers and widespread repression. Witnesses report police using tear gas and gunfire to disperse demonstrations. One Dar es Salaam resident recounted a family member being fatally shot outside a hospital, mistaken for a protester. A nationwide overnight curfew has been imposed, and internet access has been disrupted since Wednesday.

A Test for the President:

Analysts suggest President Hassan has faced opposition from factions within the army and allies of her predecessor, John Magufuli, since assuming office in 2021. They believe she sought a decisive victory to solidify her position. Before the vote, human rights groups condemned a 'wave of terror,' including high-profile abductions.

Partial election results show President Hassan leading with commanding majorities, with the electoral body announcing she had secured 96.99 percent of the votes in the initial tallies.
