Lil Nas X Hospitalized for Partial Facial Paralysis
Darren Hayes is truly, madly, deeply happy to be alive.
Indeed, the Savage Garden frontman revealed that, exactly two months after his mother Judy Hayes’ death, he endured a traumatic accident.
“I’ve been trying to keep it private,” Darren wrote in an April 18 Instagram post alongside a selfie that shows his clearly swollen jaw as well as a photo of an X-ray, “but my lengthy recovery period means it’s easier to admit the truth.”
“I lost consciousness,” he continued. “I fainted shortly after getting out of bed and collapsed 3 times, losing consciousness each time. The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half.”
The 52-year-old went on to recall waking up in a pool of blood with an unbearable pain on the left side of his head before he was taken to Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica for treatment. And to make matters worse, he later noticed that nine of his teeth were shattered in the process.
“I could have died if I landed in a different position,” the “I Want You” singer added. “They scanned for and ruled out heart issues and anything neurological.”
Four days after his fainting spells, Darren underwent emergency reconstructive surgery and had a titanium brace inserted into his jaw to reconnect the broken bones. His mouth was subsequently wired shut for a minimum of eight weeks to allow his left jaw bone to heal.
Prior to the terrifying fall, it turns out the “Affirmation” singer had been experiencing light-headedness as well as a few minor fainting spells. But now, his team of doctors can’t seem to find anything what could’ve caused the accident.
“No judgement to those who partake,” he wrote, “but I do not take drugs or drink alcohol—this was a complete shock. But we are still investigating.”

Expressing that he decided to share his story to let his fans know why he’ll be “out of action for quite some time,” he noted that he has a very long road ahead, involving lots of rehab and a few tooth replacements. But even so, Darren—who finalized his divorce from husband of 17 years Richard Cullen in 2024—made it clear that he is thankful to be on the road to recovery.
“I’m so grateful to be alive and every day I’m getting stronger,” he wrote. “I’m almost one month post surgery now and I’m only just starting to feel better.”
“After surviving a brutal divorce, losing my Mother, finding out my father died and then this I have had moments of deep sadness,” he concluded. “But I am a survivor and I’ll come back strong.”
